Serie Noire continues in April at Uitkijk with two stunning French crime classics: Jacques Becker’s Touchez Paz au Grisbi and Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Les Diaboliques. Both films will be screened from beautifully restored 35mm copies, with English subtitles. As with every Serie Noire programs, the films will be screened only once, making it an unmissable occasion to enjoy these true masterpieces on the silver screen.

10 April, 19.00h

Touchez Pas au Grisbi (Hands Off the Loot!)

Jacques Becker – 1954 – 94 min

Starring Jean Gabin, Jeanne Moureau and Lino Ventura.

An aging gangster is forced out of retirement when his best friend is kidnapped and their last heist demanded as ransom. He is unwillingly drawn back into the criminal underworld.

Directed by one of the greatest French filmmakers of the fifties, Jacques Becker, the dark and nostalgic mise-en-scene of Touchez Pas au Grisbi (known internationally as Hands Off the Loot!) set a new tone for Policier films and clearly inspired and influenced other French Policier classics such as Bob le Flambeur and Rififi.

Starring the great Jean Gabin as the elegant and romantic gangster Max le Menteur, in a role for which he was awarded as best actor at the 1954 Venice Film Festival.

24 April, 19.00h

Les Diaboliques

Henri-Georges Clouzot – 1955 – 114 min

Starring Simone Signoret, Véra Clouzot and Paul Meurisse.

The frail wife and the icy mistress of the ruthless and abusive head-master of a provincial boarding school conspire to devise a plan to kill him.

Their clever plan works, but right after the murder is committed the man’s corpse mysteriously disappears and a series of unexplainable events start haunting the boarding school. When a retired private detective gets involved in the case, the two women find themselves caught in a suffocating web of paranoia and fear.

One of the few films that truly deserve to be called ‘terrifying’, Les Diaboliques shocked audiences worldwide at its release and remains one of the best psychological thrillers to date.

Utterly gripping and superbly acted the film blends noir and gothic horror elements with detective story twists and was a major influence for suspense thrillers such as Alfred Hitchcock’s Pshycho or Roman Polansky’s Repulsion.

Over Serie Noire:

I started this film series entirely dedicated to Policier Film in January 2012.

This unique retrospective presents a program composed of legendary cult classics, screened in The Netherlands for the first time in years.

Each film will be screened on 35mm, with English subtitles. Every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at Uitkijk cinema.

My sincere ‘thank you!’ to Maison Descartes, Institute Francais des Pays-Bas and cinema Uitkijk, without whom this series couldn’t have ever been created.
