LES DAMES DU BOIS DE BOULOGNE (LADIES OF THE PARK)

Robert Bresson | 1945 | 90 min

With Paul Bernard, María Casares and Elina Labourdette.

A high society lady (Maria Casares), scorned by the end of her relationship, plots a bitter revenge on her aristocratic ex-lover Jean (Paul Bernard).
She decides to destroy his reputation by initiating a scandalous affair between him and a cabaret dancer working as a prostitute.
Based upon Didier Diderot’s renowned 18th century novel Jacques le Fataliste, Les dames du Bois de Boulogne was the second film directed by Robert Bresson.
A classic high-society melodrama, with dialogues written by the great French poet, writer and film director Jean Cocteau.

“Unforgettable for its fire-and-ice evocations of tragedy in an unlikely setting.” – Chicago Reader

AU HASARD BALTHAZAR

Robert Bresson | 1966 | 98 min

With Anne Wiazemsky, Walter Green and François Lafarge.

Shy farm girl Marie (Anne Wiazemsky) becomes the owner of a donkey and names him Balthazar. Their simple lives start peacefully but change dramatically as they both grow up and experience increasing hardness and suffering.
The same dramatic fate seems to join them even after the two are separated and follow different paths.
Marie searches for some affection while the donkey is bought and sold by different owners and silently witnesses the lives of the people he encounters.

A spiritual meditation on human cruelty and injustice through the innocent eyes of a donkey and a young girl.
One of Robert Bresson’s greatest masterpieces, awarded with the gran jury prize at the 1966 Venice Film Festival.

“Heart-breaking and magnificent. The supreme masterpiece by one of the greatest of 20th-century filmmakers.” – The Village Voice
